Hello
people of the world!
So, I’ve
been in Salamanca for a bit more than a moth now and I thought I would share
some of the things I’ve noticed that are different/weird, many of them I haven’t
really decide if I enjoy or not and some of my experience so far.
Let’s start
with academic (that are not that academic but I only noticed in uni) stuff.
Here, the students treat the professors for their first name, there’s no mr.,
mrs. or miss, I find it really strange because in Portugal would be an extreme offence
to the professor I was really chocked when I heard a guy call one of our
teachers that is a little bit older by just Javier, and to be fair I´m not yet
used to it… Is it normal in other countries? Please, enlighten me.
Other weird,
but that oh so nice, habit here is the siesta (kind of the same as nap) from
2 p.m. to 4/5 p.m. almost all of the stores are closed and everyone (almost) just
sleeps in those hours… Although it’s really nice to have “permission” to take a
nap it is not that good when you have stuff to do. But we haply live with that dilemma
ahahah.
Third thing
that I find really cool, everyone has piercings or tattoos. It’s so common
seeing a person (I’m talking about young people) with they’re nose, eyebrow or lip
pierced that it becomes the normal pattern. It’s really nice to see that in
other countries if you have an alternative style people won’t judge you for it,
or at least not so much, in Portugal many people don’t get a tattoo or a piercing
because it can affect them on the hunt for jobs, it’s just not very acceptable
there yet, but we’ll get there!
Extremely good thing, you don’t have to pay to
enter in the bars or in the clubs, only if there’s a private party! These, for
me, is the best because I really don’t drink much and I hate having to pay to
enter somewhere that I don’t know if I
like and if I pay I feel obligate to be there for a while even if I hate
the place. So 100 points for Salamanca bars!
And I think
that concludes my list of different/weird stuff.
I just want to really quickly say that I’m loving it
here, the city is beautiful and there’s always so much to do (although I haven’t
done much, but the fact that are so many possibilities pleases me a lot!) and the all experience of
living alone, having to go grocery shop and decide what you really need and want,
cooking for yourself is in fact a bless because you can always eat what you
craving and if you don’t feel like doing anything you can just eat a bowl o
cereal and no one will nag you about it,
even the cleaning part I’m loving! It’s just making me feel all grown up and
responsible, I love it.
Hope you
enjoyed it!
Kisses,
Rita J
